What have you done This was my mothers reaction upon seeing my newly decorated room. Are you mad I asked innocently. No, its beautiful, she replied. Upon seeing her affirming smile, my young heart raced. I thought she will ask that the curtains I placed on my window, the sheets I laid on my bed, and the accessories I got from the garage be removed immediately. I was wrong because it turned out, she loved what I did. Since I was little, she has encouraged my passion for decorating, for arts, for creativity. Because of this encouragement, I was able to embrace the arts at an early age. I have developed an inclination not just for design but all kinds of art such as music, painting, drawing, sculpture, among others. As a result, I aced my art classes and later on I was able to design not just my room but my whole house as well.
Furthermore, I dream of one day designing the interiors of houses in big cities such as New York and Istanbul and watching each satisfied client enjoy the beauty and comfort of not just a house but a home. For me, a home is not complete without a touch of nature in it. Hence, I always go for a house with a beautifully landscaped garden. I also opt for a design that houses nature inside, with an effect of bringing the outside environment inside. This is the signature design I want to be known for that every time a homeowner looks around his or her house, he or she would always feel that he is where he truly belongs at home with nature.
Nevertheless, I deem that passion and inclination are not enough to fulfill these goals. Expertise and experience are necessary especially in the current competitive world of design. Therefore, I reckon that a higher and more comprehensive education, specifically in interior design, will be a turning point towards the realization of my professional goals. This is what I found with San Diego State Universitys School of Art, Design, and Art History that offers Master of Arts (Studio Arts). I have chosen to apply to the Interior Design graduate program as I believe in its principle that an interior designers role does not stop at the aesthetics level but goes further in the spiritual, social, and cultural needs of clients. I have always regarded interior design as a necessary tool in creating efficient, sound, beautiful, and strategic solutions to human concerns and I feel that the program will rightfully assist me in the realization of this. Moreover, all these will be done with the guidance of professors who are not only educators but field practitioners as well. Add to that the benefits of school facilities and healthy environment for more design ideas to be enhanced and nurtured.
With these, I believe that the program will advance my career and equip me with the needed skills and training in order to prepare me in a professional and ethical involvement in the field. As a result, I will be able to come up with intelligent and artistic designs that will provide solutions to the needs of human beings and communities and the needs of the times. Nonetheless, before all these come into fruition, I plan of designing my mother her own house that when she sees it, she will again exclaimed, What have you done By that time, I would not ask whether she likes it or not. I would already know that she does.
